Introductions

Hello Class:
Welcome to your classroom blog. .  This blog environment will be your communication chat room. We will discuss course readings and other interesting topics in this environment.

The first post is non- graded assignment. All subsequent posts are graded, unless otherwise stated by me.  Students must respond to the post and at least one of their peers for each discussion thread.

The response to your peers must be substantive, that means, your post to your to your peers must move the conversation forward.  How?  By asking questions, making connections to your peers, or making an interesting observation.

A couple of quick rules:  This is a writing class.  We will write in paragraphs and not in Q&A format.  Students will also write in standard 12 pt. font, no profanity, and no insults.  Remember to attack an opinion, not the individual giving the opinion. (Ad Hominem Attack)

Please respond to the post by telling us a little about yourself.  Who are you?  How long have you been at Laney?  And what are you future goals?  How do you relax?

Thanks,

Ms. Wanzo

Greetings! My name is Phu (Tony) Luong. I am currently a student enrolled in Laney College pursuing my AA degree towards Accounting. I work in the Business Computer Open Lab as a technician which fixes hardware and software issues.

I been in Laney College for awhile as an on and off student. I always like Business because of the creativity and team spirit environment I work upon with another fellow mate. I hope by the end of this year that I’m able to finish the necessary requirements for me to transfer to Cal State Hayward.

My future goals are to do well on things I chose. I want to be more responsible, committing and positive to make the best outcome. On days that I’m stressed, I usually just called a couple friends out to grab a few drinks and relax. I am a laid back type of guy so I am easily satisfied.

Hello, everyone. My name is Chun Wing Wan, an International student from Hong Kong. You may also call me Andrew. I have been studying in the United States for almost three years. This is my third semester as a full time student at Laney College. My major is Computer Science, which is a wonderland to me because I want to develop and explore my special interest in the world of information technology. I am interested in computer problems, hardware, and commands that cause computer to work. My interest in Computer Science can be traced back to my childhood and adolescence in Hong Kong. When I was in high school, I was interested in watching the computer technicians entering words from the keyboard and repairing the computers. I used to look at the computer lab wondering how the computer technicians changed computer hardware and typed commands in a complex software language. All those computer activities grabbed my full attention and interest. At that moment, I decided to become an Information Technology professional, hoping that, one day, I could assist people to solve any computer hardware and software problems. Besides this, I enjoy playing soccer, basketball, and badminton with my friends in my leisure time because I believe that exercising can help me out with my academic performance. When I feel tired of my busy school work, I will take a nap or listen to my favorite music in order to relax myself. At last, I am looking forward to understanding all of my English 5 classmates more in this blog.

Thanks,

Ms. Wanzo

Finally, I think we should find a place and grab few drinks at Laney one day.

Hi folks-

My name is Cameron Attaran. I was born here in Oakland but raised over in Lafayette. I love food, music, and traveling. I have been playing music for 18 years, have been a vegetarian for 6 years, and have traveled to 3 different continents. I am an avid San Francisco Giants fan and season ticket holder.

After graduating high school, I dropped out of college (San Francisco State) to join a band. We played all over California, recorded an album together, and met some fairly famous people along the way. While the rest of the group is still together, I left in early 2010 to pursue some of my other goals in life. I have been at Laney since the spring semester of 2010. I currently work in a restaurant called "Chow" where I bar tend five days a week. I go to school the other two days of the week. I am back here in school because I would one day like to be a teacher.

I am a fairly relaxed person in general but I always enjoy going out for dinner, quiet walks, or conversation when I want to wind down after a long day. I'm excited to be here, look forward to getting to know everyone, and hope to have a lot of fun this semester.

Cheers,

Hi Everyone! My name is Jennifer Reeves, but I prefer to be called Jenn for short.(That might make it easier since there seem to be two Jennifers in the class this term.) I am a Certified Personal Trainer, Aerobics Instructor and Massage Therapist and happen to be on my way to transfer to either Cal State East Bay for their Pre-Physical Therapy program or to SFSU for theirs. I have been at Laney off and on for 1 year but mostly have been at Alameda College.
I have two children who I have raised on my own for the past 5 years, both boys age 18 and 16. My 18 year old just got accepted as a freshman and is now living in the dorms at CSUMB (Cal State University Monterrey Bay), and is enrolled in their film program. My 16 year old just moved in with his dad over this past summer and lives in Seattle now. I travel as often as possible to see him. Trying to go to school, raise 2 boys and put food on the table myself has been a challenge, but well worth it and I am finally looking foreword to getting my degree since it took me 38 years to decide what I want to do. I am now finishing my prerequisites so that I might transfer, and finding myself in the process.
I look foreword to getting to know this class and having a little fun in the process..
Have a great day and thanks for reading.

Hello, my name is David Nguyen. I was born in San Diego and moved to Oakland three years ago. I’ve been at Laney College for three semesters (and one summer session). I am currently majoring in computer science and planning to transfer very soon to a CSU.
I have no major future goals, but to take opportunities as they come. I would like to work for one of the major tech companies and maybe even create something useful. I cannot tell how my future will be like, but I am optimistic.
I relax by listening to music and watching movies. I like to listen to many types of music, preferably electronic or rock music. I also listen to hip-hop, R&B, and pop. Although some people say they hate country music, I find it interesting. People have to give things a chance before saying they hate it. Hello, my name is Tevita Mafi. Well I've been at Laney for about three semesters now and I'm deciding on being here for one more after this one. My goals are clouded at the moment. I really haven't decided on a major yet so I'm just getting my general education out the way for now. I play football so I'm hoping that this is my ticket to a four year. The only thing that I think relaxes me is being with friends and just lounging around where ever we are. I'm really not into doing a lot of activities but I do enjoy going out and experiencing new things on occasion. That's it on me and my life and i do hope that I do well in this class.

All information could be found out from our counselors, or www.assist.org. I transfer to SFSU after I finished all GE requirements. It took me about 1 and 1/2 years.

Santorini is one of places I love the most in the world. At this moment, I think the place where is better to live is San Francisco because its public transportation is better than others, especially to people without car.

Hello, Xiaomei Li
I like traveling too. I just wonder which country you like to travel. My favorite country where I want to take a vacation is Australia. Do you like Australia?
In addition, I also love movies, have you ever watched “Cast Away”? I love this movie very much. Do you have any movie you like the most and recommend? I would like to know more about that.

However, Good to have you with us….

Hello everyone, my name is Kimhung Lau. I come from China. I have been in the United States for almost three years. Right now, I’m taking classes at Laney Colleg and I major is Business Accounting. I’m planing to transfer to San francisco or East Bay University next year. My favourite habit is watching movie. I really like that because I think we can learn a lot from the film. I usually go to theater with my best friends in the weekend. Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan are my favourite movie. In this semester, I hope I can improve my English and have fun with all of you.

Hi, Mei.
I have no idea about coffee beans even if I am working in a coffee shop.
I only know that I like Starbucks. :P

Coffee shop is a good choice for a business. In USA, many people like coffee. It is like a public addiction. Because you plan to build your own business, I think Business is a right major for you. It will help you to run your business better in the future. I think deciding a major is selecting your future career. For example, my job work with coffee but I don’t have enough knowledge of coffee, so I can’t answer customers’ questions related to coffee. It is a disadvantage to my job. Therefore, I will recommend you to study what you want to be. Knowledge is one of the keys to success.

The difference between SLR and DSLR is an X-file for me. I am not a camera-player so I don’t know any about that, but I like to take photos in my trips. I like to use photography to record the life more than to keep writing diary. I like to take photos on people, nature, landscape, animals, and everything in the world and in my life. I would like to use Photoshop to fix pictures but I am not good at it.

I do like to travel. Domestically, I like Hawaii the most. I went there once several years ago. I love there because sunshine, beaches, and people are super wonderful. It will be a good choice to go for a vacation. I haven’t been to a lot of places, but I wish I could keep exploring this country.

At the last, I think you can clear the X-file about SLR and DSLR for me. ^0^

I love to travel too. It is great to view different places of landscapes and taste different cultural food. What places have you been to? Did you find any things interesting to you?

Nice to meet you, Jingrong Ma. My major is business too, but what type of business major you working on. I love travel too, but have only been to a few place. What are the places you would suggest other people to go? I’m looking a good place at the bay area for my spring break vacation. . ^_^ Where is the most beautiful place you have been to?

I think “Cast Away” is a very good movie. I really like this movie too. Have you ever watched “The Day After Tomorrow”? It is a great movie. This movie talks about how the world look like if the amount of greenhouse gas continue at such levels will result in worldwide catastrophe and nature disaster, such as hurricanes, tornadoes..etc. I like to watch action, adventure, sci-fi and comedy movies. What type of movies would you like to watch more?

Hello everyone, my name is Linh Vi. This is my fourth semester at Laney College. I choose accounting as my major. I am planning to get associate diploma while I am taking academic classes at college and then transfer to the University. I have been debating about accounting should be my career cause I think I am good at math, and like to deal with number. If I am good enough, I could earn a CPA, and may have my own firm later. Moreover, I also need to defeat the language struggles and culture differences in order to reach my goal. On my free time, I love travelling, watching movie, and playing computer. I spend more time for playing computer in the U.S. compare to my home country since I don’t have many friends and people are always busy for their home, study and work.
As for my last semester at Laney, I hope I could pass this class with a good grade, and everyone would enjoy and have great experience in the class.

Hey everyone! My name is Karen Saechao and I am nineteen years old. I was born and raised in Oakland and I haven’t lived elsewhere yet. I am Asian American but to be more specific, I am Mien American, however I feel like I do not deserve to call myself an Asian whatsoever because I am too Americanized. Mien is my "native" language, but I am not fluent in this language that I dare call native for myself. In fact, it's quite embarrassing because I recently learned how to count in Mien although I'm still working on memorizing the numbers.

This is my fourth semester Laney and College of Alameda. My goals are to transfer to a four year university either next spring semester or winter quarter depending on the system of the school I decide to attend. I hope to graduate at earn my BA in either Asian American Studies or Liberal Studies by the time I'm 22 years old. I thought I wanted to be a social worker, but now I'm confused about what I really want to do with my life. Though I may be confused about career goals right now, I do know that I want to get married and have a family one day.

During leisure time, I sometimes relax by being a couch potato or staying in bed all day and having alone time. Other times, I enjoy hanging out with family and friends and simply enjoying each others' company. When the weather is nice, I like going to the beach and having barbecues.

My email is saechaokaren@gmail.com. If anyone wants to contact me whether it concerns an assignment or anything, feel free to contact me. I hope this will be a fun and successful semester for everyone!

My name is Ka Ki YU and friends here usually call me Kay. I am an international student. After finishing my high school in Hong Kong, I came to US for my bachelor degree. Including the summer semester, it is already the forth semester in Peralta Community College District and this is my second semester in Laney College. I am also working for the student government in Laney College now.
I am planning to transfer to a University in next fall. I hope I can transfer to UC, Berkeley or UC, LA. In this semester, I have taken 24 units which is pretty heavy for me but I believe I am ready for this. Besides English 1B class, I am taking history, economics, accounting, statistic and sociology classes. People always asks me why do I take that much. It is because I want to finish my college as soon as possible. In that way, I can transfer to the university quickly. Once I have finished my bachelor degree here, I will probably go back to Hong Kong and find a job since my family is in Hong Kong.
During my leisure time, I often go to the Berkeley Public library as I am a volunteer in the Asian collection of the library. I like volunteering. On one hand, volunteering can kill time. But what is more important is I don’t want my life in here is all about studying. I believe, through volunteering, I can be more outgoing and have more chances to communicate with westerners.

Ahoy friends! My name is Diane Truong. I am a female, 19 years old and this is my fourth and last semester in school before I transfer to a state college. I am a Vietnamese American and was born and raised in California. I currently reside in Alameda, but decided to take an English 5 class at Laney because of the great reviews for Ms. Wanzo. I am shy, but I am super friendly and super nice. To relax I love to sleep and watch t.v. I love reality shows, I think that they are awesome and can have a long conversation with anyone who watches the shows that I do. I also love to make friendship bracelets and am always on the computer for countless hours searching for different tutorials. I also love to take long walks not just on the beach, but everywhere and probably have a unhealthy addiction to horoscopes.

My future goals are to become a Social Worker and receive a masters in Social Working. After I receive my Bachelor in Sociology in a state college, I plan to take one year off of school and join the Peace Corp. I love helping people and would love to devote my time and career to helping others. I am also a license Cosmetologist and my second future goal is to get a part time job working in a salon. I spent my junior and senior year going to Beauty School for my Cosmetology license so I would like to put it to good use. School is not my most best or favorite subject, but I am taking it one day at a time.

As the old timers would say, tough times don't last but tough people do. My name is Jennifer Cornelius and I have had a lot of good and bad moments. However, going through those moments made me the person I am today. I am a strong, young black woman striving for success. I am a wife and mother of four girls. Not only four girls; but, I am expecting another baby and my husband and I hoping this time it’s a boy. It’s a challenge to raise a family and go to school, but I find a way to get everything done. There are times when I feel overwhelmed. Nevertheless, I take a look at my family and think about their future. I know things would be a little easier when I accomplish my goals. I would take a deep breath, get a massage and rest my mind so I can relax. Then I would take a go at it again, fighting for my future. I've been at Laney approximately two years. It seems like I been at Laney for a decade, but I know it's just my imagination. I plan to finish my prerequisite so I can apply to every nursing program and became an RN.

As you see, I am taking so many classes, and it is total 23 units. The reason that I am taking so many classes is I would like to transfer to 4 years college next year. Actually, the class I worry the most in this class English 5, because English is my second language, and I am not a good writer. Therefore, my goal in this class is improve my English and my writing skills. For me, when I get in trouble, and feel frustrating, I usually listen to pop music, and watch a movie. After that I will feel much better. However, if the problem is still not solved yet, I will take to my friend and try to fix the problem with them. After all, I am also a senator in the student government of Laney College. I would like to mention that we will have a Lunar New Year Event on February 3¬rd from 12 to in Laney quad. We will have fun, music, magic, and food. Hopefully, I will see you guys there. Finally, I hope that everyone will learn a lot in this class and have a great semester.

Hi everybody, my name is Yanxia Li. I am happy that I can recognize some people in the class. This is my second year of enrolling Laney College. I am major in accounting. I hope that I can have enough credit to transfer as soon as possible. Unfortunately, English is not my first language, and my English skill is still lack of improvement. Critical thinking is also my weak point. So, I would try my best to earn the grade. Hopefully, I can pass this class. Good luck to all.

Hello Wing Lam Hui.
Nice to meet you, too.
My mojor basically is all about chilren. Taking this major for AA degree, you could be a teacher in Care Center, from infants to preschool age. For BA degree, you could be a teacher for school age, such as elementary school. Also, you could be in social worker for youth or position of research and policy.
In SFSU, CAD includes 4 concentrations, which I mentioned above.

I haven't been to many places in Bay Area yet, but Berkeley and San Jose are lovely place to go.
Plus, Monterey is worth to go, too. I like Monterey Bay Aquarium.

My goals here are to complete an associates degree and transfer to a four year college. My major is Nursing.
Being a student, a single mom, and having a full-time job, I find it hard to have spare time other than the time I go to sleep at night. Relaxation I may want to say is far from me.
This class, I can see, will be interesting. I look forward to working with you all as friends and good course mates.

Thank you.
