According to the excerpt, “Did Shakespeare Ever Think Twice,” Stephen Greenblatt wants to tell us that hard working is the only way for everyone to be successful.
In our daily life, we frequently type our essays by Microsoft Word which has a “track changes,” a function that track all changes to the document, including insertions, deletions, and formatting changes. We easily forget what the actual steps of writing are. Stephen shows that we mostly encounter difficulties that discourage us from success. At the same time, we also think of successful writers that no difficulties happen to them.
Stephen shows us with strong evidence that even though a famous and the greatest writer, Shakespeare, have paid a lot of time to rewrite. Since Stephen and his scholars compare different versions of Shakespeare’s same play which came from his first folio, they strongly believe that Shakespeare wrote not only once for his play. In Fortinbras's band, "lawless resolutes" become "landless resolutes," Stephen and his scholars were thinking of its motives again. Also, the quarto's "What's Hecuba to him, or he to her," becomes the folio's "What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba," they realize that Shakespeare was hiding his hard revising work.
At last, Stephen reminds us that writing is hard, but we always look easy because the computer easily help us a lot.
With respect to revision, it is important to revise my work because I do not always write a perfect essay when I first get started. Revision gives a great opportunity to look critically what I have written. For me, I will proof read my essay and check for grammar, fluency, and word choice since those are my weaknesses more than one time. After that, I will show my essay to my friends and check if there are mistakes.
The difference between revising and editing is that editing process targets grammar problems, while the revising process focuses on readability, logic and clarity. Both processes are considered as repeating process in writing.
Please correct me if I made any mistake.
Thanks.
Greenblatt’s main idea is if Shakespeare revised his work. He supports this by saying that Shakespeare “…wrote, on average, two plays a year, acted in his own plays and those of others, penned sonnets, and helped to run a theater company, to say nothing of his many other business interests.” Greenblatt states that he did not have the time to revise his work because of his other ventures. He then states that Shakespeare did indeed find the time to revise his work. He made thousands of small changes to his plays. Greenblatt’s is telling the audience that writing is not easy and that everyone needs to revises their work.
It is important to revise our work. The first draft is just a way to get our ideas on paper before we forget them. When you revise your work you can add more analysis and rewrite sentences that may not make sense. I revise my work by rereading the paper. I check to make sure all the sentences all flow and support my position. I also may sure that it also connects to the thesis of the paper. Revision and editing are different because editing checks for grammar and revision checks for fragmented sentences.
hi Caresse,
I agree what you said in your comment that Shakespeare do spent his time for his revising because of the theater company sentences. Shakespeare made thousands of changes to his plays, but he did not show to other people.
Also, I really admire his hard work.
However, I do not quite understand what you said "Greenblatt states that he did not have the time to revise his work because of his ventures." Where you can find this? Would you like to share with me?
When I revise my essay, I pretty do the same as you mentioned. However, I will use the grammar checking from the Microsoft Office Word so that I can check the errors easier.
Thanks.
I agree with Shakespeare, its very important to do that. We are our judges and expect far beyond our expectations, and doing a great job and doing criticism on our papers is a very important. Its very important that you actual do both revise and edit your essay. Although it seems as if it were to be the same is not. Revision is when you revise your essay and add the final details and reviewing that everything is set up properly. However,is reviewing the grammar and punctuations are exactly where they need to be placed.
Hello Caresse Fong,
I completely agree with you that its very important that we all revise our work not only to have a good essay but to continue learning on how to become better writers and the opinions from other will make our essay better. The fact that we want to improve on our writing will not only help us here in a community college but it will definitely help us in a lifetime.

Reading the article "Did Shakespeare Ever Think Twice?" by Stephen Greenblatt, the main idea that Greenblatt gave to me is that Shakespeare, "rarely revised his work." The reason why he never revised his work was because he was a busy man, "after all, was a man who wrote, on average, two plays a year, acted in his own plays and those of others, penned sonnets, and helped to run a theater company, to say nothing of his many other business interests." He has so much going on in his life.
It's important to revise your work because you want to make sure that your spelling and grammars are correct. The way I revise my work is that I reread it out loud to myself and I'll catch the mistakes that missed. Most time I believe that if you have someone else reread your paper that they'll catch more mistakes than you can because it's easier for someone else to catch your mistake than yourself.
The difference between revision and editing is that revision "is the act of revising" and editing is "to revise or correct, as a manuscript."

Hi Jessica
I can't agree with you more. I do think that it's important that we revise and edit our essay but don't you agree that when others reread our essays that they'll catch more mistakes that we missed?
Greenblatt's main idea is writing is not easy and it's so important to revise and edit our essay. He supports his point of view by taking Shakespeare as his example. Shakespeare was so busy and didn't have time to revise and edit his plays “…wrote, on average, two plays a year, acted in his own plays and those of others, penned sonnets, and helped to run a theater company, to say nothing of his many other business interests.” However, he tried to find time to do it "A number of Shakespeare's plays survive in both the small quarto editions, inexpensively published during his lifetime, and in the first folio. Comparing versions of the same play, I and other scholars have concluded that many of the differences are probably due to Shakespeare's own obsessive fiddling". Shakespeare made a lot of changes in his plays.
It's important to revise our work because nothing is perfect in our world and people always make mistake so we have to review our work to fix our mistake and make it better. Nowadays, we have Microsoft Word, so we don't have to worry about words or grammar because it will check the errors for us. However, I still review my essay to rewrite, add or reduce some sentences because after I read it, I might have some more ideas to improve my point of view.
The difference between revision and editing is we need to do the revise (like reviewing and finding mistake) "the act of rewriting something, evise or reorganize, especially for the purpose of updating and improving" (from dictionary)and then edit (like fix it, we can change, add or cut something)"prepare for publication or presentation by correcting, revising, or adapting" (from dictionary).
I agree with you that if we have someone else reread our paper that they'll catch more mistakes than we can because it's easier for someone else to catch our mistake than ourselves. Some of them, we can't realize we made it wrong because in our mind we stated it's right. If we knew it was wrong we didn't write it.
Greenblatt's main idea is to pursuade people revise their work but try to not so rely on computers.
He used Shakespeare's story to told us that revised is very important. Every play of Shakespeare's work has revisd many times. He tried to made people more understand the story, and feel more interested on it .
The work will be more organize, easy understand and have more information on it if you revise it. I usually revise my works many times. I will use Microsoft Word to correct my spelling and grammar first. After that, I will read it again, and fix some error and change some senstence try to make them clear, to let people understand.
Rivision is the add some new point or your work, or say it in another way.Editing is is just change the spelling and grammar.
Greenblatt's mean idea is people always think Writing is easy because we all have the assistance from the computer to help us create the format, revise and edit whenever we have a mistake in Writing but Writing is not easy like we thought. To become a successful writer, we need to more revise and edit our work in writing and make our writing more fluency and powerful. He support his point of view by a famous writer Shakespeare who have written with such amazing confidence. Shakespeare was a busy man but he still had time to revise his plays. Greenblatt and other scholars found that Shakespeare had revised many times in his plays “I and other scholars have concluded that many of the differences are probably due to Shakespeare's own obsessive fiddling. Not all of them, to be sure. In the so-called bad quarto, for example, we find "To be or not to be; ay, there's the point,"” In “Fortinbras's band of "lawless resolutes" become "landless resolutes," we are encountering a subtle rethinking of motives. And when the quarto's "What's Hecuba to him, or he to her," becomes the folio's "What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba,” Greenblatt believe that “the writer choosing to break his perfectly good iambic pentameter line for the sake of something more powerful.”
It is important to revise my work because I always have a mistake in Grammar, work choice and structure of sentences whenever I am writing an essay. To revise my essay, I am always read out loud my essay in many times to look for the errors and edit the errors. I also bring my essay to my friends for asking them to help me revise it because sometimes I can not recognize my mistakes by myself or my idea is so poor for the essay but my friends can give me the great idea and help me to correct the errors that can make my essay perfectly and fluently when reading.
Revision is to read the essay in many times to look for the errors or improve the idea for the essay. Editing is to edit the errors and the good idea for the essay.
Hi Kimvy!
i agree with you that writing is not easy and it's so important to revise and edit our essay. I also agree with you about we need to revise our essay by rewrite it to reduce some sentences we don't need to and add some good idea to improve our point of view that can make our essay perfectly and fluently when reading.
I agree with Stephen Greenblatt, When he wrote " If you write as i do-with a succession of false starts and crossing out and second guessing that haunts virtually every sentence-it is easy to get discouraged and to imagine that real writers are exempt from the whole tiresome business". Greenblatt's main idea is that when you don't have confidence when writing, it is easy to get discourage about your writing.
It's important to revise your work because its easy to make mistakes when writing. I revise my work by re-reading my work and by having someone else read my work. Revison and editing are so similar but the difference is, that editing forces on grammer problems while revision focus on logic, and clarity.
To Kimvy, I agree when you wrote " its important to revise your work because nothing is perfect in our world and people always make mistakes..". I liked how you wrote this because nothing in life is perfect.
I think Greenblatt’s main idea is telling us to be more responsible and honest for writing. In another word, he persuades us doing the best to make our works come out great. To do this, much revision and editing are recommended and necessary. In the essay, Greenblatt shows he and other scholars had a research on Shakespeare’s plays, and they finds out “There are literally thousands of these tiny changes (revision and editing).” Shakespeare, such a literacy giant, even needed to do much work to make better writing, how could we just keep producing “fair copies”? Thus, the research on Shakespeare makes his point of view very strong and powerful.
Revision is so important because it improves our works. Specifically, it makes our works more fluent and logical. When I revise my paper, I get used to make sure the organization is logical, in which each point connects to one another and makes sense. If I find I am going off the topic at any point, I go back and revise the paragraphs in order to keep them stick with my central idea. In the final step, I will go to correct some spelling and grammar mistakes.
Revision is a big change that works on organization such as paragraphs and the writer’s ideas like thesis statement, while editing is correction based on the unit of words or sentences like spelling errors and grammar mistakes.
I agree that we rely on assistance from computer too much today.
I think this kind of assistance helps us save a lot of work, for example, Microsoft Word is able to correct some wrong words automatically. But I also think that this kind of work to correct spelling error or grammar mistakes sometimes can train us to have a good writing. If we correct them by ourselves, we may not make the same mistakes again. Otherwise, computer may take away this work from us.
I so often have many grammar mistakes in my writing too. However, your strategy on revision may be useful for me, just as reading out loud the essay and asking for help, and I am going to give it a try. Thank you, Ken.
In the excerpt "Did Shakespeare Ever Think Twice?", Stephen Greenblatt mainly described the important role of revision. Stephen Greenblatt took Shakespeare’s story as an evidence to support his point of view. Shakespeare was regarded as the greatest writer. Most people considered that Shakespeare wrote with confidence and he didn’t need to revise his plays. However, through researching on Shakespeare’s plays, Stephen found that Shakespeare also used to find his time to revise work with thousands of small changes. Finally, Stephen Greenblatt stated that writing is always hard, and he encouraged readers to revise their writing.
It is important to revise our work because we can improve our writing skill through revision. When I write the first draft of my essay, I usually go to Writing Center to get help from the tutors. I will get some suggestions from them. After that, I will revise my essay. I not only focus on the grammar, but also check the whole essay. Dose the thesis clear? Do the evidences support the thesis? Does the whole essay organize well? When I revise the draft, I will check the whole essay with these questions.
Editing refers to small changes in the writing, such as grammar, punctuation or spelling. In contrast, revision is focusing on many elements in the draft. Revision means to rethink the paper, reconsider arguments, review evidences or reorganize the essay. Through revision, we can add material, delete material, and make corrections to improve our essay.
Greenblatt’s main idea is that revision is needed while we are writing. No one can write a piece of work that is free of errors. In order to improve our work, we need to make changes or modifications on it. Many successful writer need to revise their work for several times. Greenblatt supports his idea by using Shakespeare as an example. A great writer like Shakespeare, who is very busy in his plays, could find time to revise his work. Even though he is a well known writer, he still needed to revise his play. Therefore, revision is almost a must to writers.
Talking about revision, it is a very important process of writing especially to me. I usually have grammar mistakes in my work. Article and agreement are my problems in writing. Therefore, I need time to revise my work in order to do a better job. Grammar mistakes can mislead people from understanding my writing. Therefore, in order to make my essay clear to the audience, I would revise my work. Most of the time, I will read my essay out loud so as to catch the grammar mistakes that I have. This is also to find whether the flow of the essay is workable or not. Sometimes, I would find my friends or tutors to read my work. They usually can give me feedback as they are fresh to the topic I wrote. They would be the best one to point out whether my essay is logical and work to them or not.
I think revision doesn’t have any boundaries while editing has. What I mean by boundaries is that, editing is making changes in the text. However, these changes should be based on the context and they are slightly different from the original only. On the other hand, revision is that you can make changes of what you like. You can scratch out the whole paragraph as you like. Changes can be made without any limitation.
We often make mistake while writing. Revision can help us improving our writing skills too. We can learn from our mistakes.
When you are saying the difference between revision and editing, are you saying that revision is focusing on the context as a whole and editing is focusing on the wordings we use?
Hello Ken,
I agree with your idea about that we need more revise and edit our work in writing and make our writing more fluency and powerful. We may have many mistakes in the first draft. Therefore, we need to take our time to read it again to check the grammar, thesis, evidences and organization. It is necessary to review the essay and make correction. When we make revision, we need to analyze the essay and think deeply to improve it. I also agree that reading paper out loud, sentence by sentence, can help us to find a mistake from the essay.
Stephen Greenblatt stated in "Did Shakespeare Ever Think Twice?" the importance of revising in writing. He used one of the most famous writer, Shakespeare to make a point how difficult and complicated writing can be. It's no difference for the famous author Shakespeare himself that mistakes happened and continuously revising is inevitable to make the best senses sent to your audience.
Revising is important because it help create the best format to make sure the content make sense, orders are place correctly and enough details to support your point. Revising is pretty similar to observation. Through Revising, you will likely find mistakes you might have missed.
Editing is making correction to grammar, spelling, punctuation, spacing, indention, etc.
Hi Crystal, I like how you gave example how important is Revising a paper. When I read your example, it made me think that almost everything in our life should be review, practice and observe, etc to make it as perfect as we could. A football player would need to sprint 50 laps per day in order to make sure he could outrun the other team, a basketball player would need to shoot 100 times for practice to reduce the chances he'll miss and it's no different for a paper to go through the process of finding that little small mistake to make it better.
Greenblatt’s mean idea is to persuade people revise their works. Writing is not easy, we always make mistakes, its why revise and editing are important. He supports his point of view by showing us that a famous writer, Shakespeare has revise his plays many times to make the play more interesting. In Greenblatt’s article, he and other scholar find out that Shakespeare has made thousand of small change in his play. For example: “when Fortinbra’s band of “lawless resolutes” become “landless resolute,” and the Quarto’s “What Hecuba to him, or he to her,” become the folio’s “What’s Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba.” (Did Shakespeare Ever Think Twice?) Even though a greater writer like Shakespeare needs to revise his play, it demonstrates how important and necessary to revise our work.
It is important to revise our work because we don’t always produce a good paper when we first started and we always find some mistakes to correct. To revise my paper, I will reread my essay out loud and check for grammatical errors. I also need to check if the essay flow smooth from one topic to another and make sure the paragraphs support the claim that I made in the thesis statement.
The difference between revision and editing is that revision deal with structure, logical or flow. On the other hand, editing focus on fixing grammatical, spelling errors, punctuation mistakes, and other mechanical problems.
In “Did Shakespeare Ever Think Twice”, Greenblatt’s main idea is that writing is not as easy as we think. A good writing needs to include revision and editing in our own thoughts, not by computer. In addition, the author provides a good example of Shakespeare’s writing to support his point of view. The following is the words before revision and after, “lawless resolutes” become “landless resolutes”. This example shows that the writer does putting effort to do revision. It is not liked we spell a wrong word and the computer helps us to make correction.
It is important to revise our work because it makes our work more fluent. For my writing, I always do proven reading to make sure that every paragraph is organized and having transition sentences between each other. In addition, I will check that if I have strong arguments to support my thesis. During this process, if I observe anything wrong, I will rewrite it to make my paper better.
Revision is to change the whole organization of the paper, such as thesis, arguments and ideas. Editing is to correct the words that are spelling wrong or to correct grammar issues.
Hi Jassica, I agree with you that we often make mistakes while we writing a paper. It’s why revision is very important and necessary. I think it is a great idea to have someone else read the work, because sometime we cannot recognize our own mistake or maybe the reader can give some great information and ideas for the paper.
Hi Jessica V igil,
I agree with what you said, “It's important to revise your work because its easy to make mistakes when writing. I revise my work by re-reading my work and by having someone else read my work.” I always make mistakes in my first draft, such as grammar issues and disorganized my paper. For revision, I like to ask tutors to give me ideas. They will not help me correct my idea or grammar, but they will give me advice by teaching me how to make my paper organized and what tense should I use in different situations. I think this is a good way to learn.
Regarding professors Greenblatts excerpt; I agree with his main analogy on how difficult it is to write. Although, technology has eased the transition from paper, and pen to keyboard and word writing can still be a challenge. Speaking on my behalf, it has been a difficult and challenging in the world of writing. There is so much to grasp, creatively, as well as comprehensibly. In addition, I find myself having continuously the same the issues that Professor Greenblatts has; the Succession of false starts and crossing out and second guessing my work. Sure, it can be very discouraging when all the hard work that’s put in is not recognize, you become frustrated, unmotivated to continue and ultimately just giving up!
Professor Greenblatts goes on to support his conclusion by reexamining a number of play’s that were written by world renowned play writer Shakespeare. Although, the notion was Shakespeare who was to have written with not only amazing confidence, but supreme easiness was notorious for fiddling obsessively and did a creative job in hiding all the hard work that was put in! With respects to revision! It is the up most important thing a writer must do. For example, looking for misspelled words, fragmented sentences, grammar errors, and structure of paragraphs, and how the paper is organized. The way I revise my work, is to read out loud in the privacy of my own home, and if I can find someone who is willing; have them read it out loud back to me as well. The objective is to make sure that it all makes since.
Finally, the difference between revision and editing; when revising you want to make changes, corrections or perhaps a new version. With editing, you’re looking for punctuations, grammar to prepare for publication (Webster dictionary).
According to the article, Did Shakespeare Ever Think Twice, Greenblatt’s main idea is a good writing needs revision. The way that being a successful writer is hard. Greenblatt use a famous author, Shakespeare, as an example to support his idea. A successful author like Shakespeare needed to find time to revise his writing. Even though Shakespeare was busy, and concentrated in his play, he still needed to revise his writing to writing a better play. I think that writing need to be hard work and revision is a must when we are writing, and I believe that was Greenblatt trying to tell us in his article.
Revision is very important to me, because I always make mistakes when I write. I need to revise my writing many times to correct my grammar, spelling mistakes, and I also check for connection and word choice problems, but my writing is still not perfect after a lot of revision. When I revise my work, I usually read it out loud, so I can also find my mistakes though my ears. I will also find tutors and friends to help me correct my mistakes, because I usually cannot find the error by myself. Therefore, I think that listening to other suggestion is very important for writing. For editing and revision, I think revision come before editing. After you revise your work, you edit your work to make it better. Revision gives us a chance to correct the mistake in the writing, and editing to give us an opportunity to make our writing more logical and fluency.
In order to make the papers better, writers tend to revise their writing. Even though as a famous person like Shakespeare and Fortinbras, they made the revision as well. For example, Greenblatt and other scholars concluded that Shakespeare’s play “To be or not to be; ay, there’s a point,” did not came firstly from Hamlet’s word the but was from an actor’s lousy memory. In addition, there was Fortinbras’s band’s “lawless resolute” become “landless resolute” (Did Shakespeare ever think twice?”. Revising is the step that leads to powerful, interesting and attractive papers to the readers. Moreover, the final outcome is more important than the process, and some authors have carefully concealed their process to make their outcome to look like easy and fluency. This is one of the ways to present their talent on writing.
It is important to revise my work because it gives us a chance to rearrange ideas and find out grammar, spellings, and punctuation mistakes. In order to revise my paper, I will be sure that my thesis statement is clearly stated, and each of the examples is supported. I sometimes have someone to proof read to correct my grammar and sentence structures.
The difference between revision and editing is the editing is focus on grammar and usage, with correcting spelling, completing fragments and fixing run-ons problems; however, the revision process is focused on reconsidering the arguments, reviewing the evidence, refining the purpose restructure the paper, eliminate unnecessary details or information.
Hi Crystal,
We do the same thing after we write is to find the tutor in writing center. We get suggestion from them, and correct out writing. Therefore, I think find others to read out writing is a good way to improve our writing too. Moreover, I think that you have a good point of revision is that revise our work can also improve our writing skill, because when we revise our work, we find the mistakes from it and correct it. From this way, we can find what our weakness in writing is, and improve that area.
Thank you!
In the article "Did Shakespeare Ever Think Twice? ", Greenblatt tries to tell us that it is important for us to spend more time on revising writing. Besides "writing is never easy, but we all like to make it look easy—and the computer greatly helps us maintain that pretense." According what he states, we discover that writing is not easy to achieve. Moreover most of us, now, often use computers to correct the grammar and spelling in our writings and think that is all for revising. However, revision is not just covering on grammar and spelling but on more such as our ideas, thesis, and evidence. To persuade us to revise our writing as many times as we can, he shows us that Shakespeare also revises his plays many times so he can succeed.
With respect to revision, it is significant to revise our work because revision gives us a chance to rethink our arguments and make them stronger. In addition, revision can help us improve our writing looking our ideas critically and reviewing our evidences. To revise my work, I will see my thesis and organization at first since my thesis is often week and I need rewrite it. Then I will check my spelling and grammar because I often make mistakes on them. Finally, I will read my paper once and then find our where I still need to change my ideas or which words I should not use. Also I will go the writing center in Laney College to get help on revision of my paper.
Editing is one part of revision and making surface changes of our writings or reorganizing what is already in our writings. However, for revision, we need to think through our ideas, review our evidences, and more. It is not just about changing things we already have.
In the article “ Did Shakespeare Ever Think Twice?”, Stephen Greenblatt’s main idea is that writing is not easy, and it is quite important to revise for writing. As Stephen said: “If you write as I do—with a succession of false starts and crossing-out and second-guessing that haunts virtually every sentence—it is easy to get discouraged and to imagine that real writers are exempt from the whole tiresome business.”it clearly shows that Stephen thinks writing is not easy. Also, in the article, Stephen of provide Shakespeare’s example to support his idea. Stephen said that : “There are literally thousands of these tiny changes. What then of Shakespeare's reputation for "easiness"? He evidently had a stake in hiding all of the hard work that went into his apparent fluency.” Stephen means that Shakespeare had revised and edited to finish his writing work. Stephen provide Shakespeare’s example to support his idea. It makes his idea more stronger.
It is really important to revise because it helps to write much better. Everytime, when I finish my first draft of the writing work, I will read it carefully from the beginng to the end. And then I will pick some the weak part and illogical part to revise it. It can make my paper much smooth and reasonable. Moreover, I know my grammar is poor, so I always bring my paper to Writing Center to get help from tutors. It can help me to improve my paper.
In my opinion, I think revision and editing is totally different. Revision is changing our ideas in the writing. Sometime, your own viewpoint will totally change. On the other hand, Editing is changing your word, fixing your grammar and correcting your spelling.
I agree with you that “nothing is perfect in our world and people always make mistake so we have to review our work to fix our mistake and make it better” because we all want to show the perfect work to the readers, and the perfect paper need to have a lot of editing and revising to have the best outcome. In addition, People have to deal with the long process of hard work in order to get through the final work regardless how smart and famous they are.
To Chun Wing Wan (Andrew)
When I said that he didn't have time to to revise his work it tied in the quote that I put in my comment. I was trying to expand on the quote. Basically I was trying to say that Shakespeare had so much on his plate that he would have not had the time to revise. I hope that helps.
I also I use Mircosoft Word too but I also like to read off a hard copy.
HI Ruiqi, i really agree with you that revision gives us a chance to rethink our arguments and make them stronger. It gives us a chance to pick some the weak part and illogical part to revise it. It can make my paper much smooth and reasonable. I also go to the Writing Center to get help. That is a good place
According to Stephen Greenblatt’s exerpt "Did Shakespeare Ever Think Twice?" Greenblatt's main idea is that writing is not easy so it is best to do revisions with or without the technology we have today. Like how Greenblatt stated that “one of the strange effects of the word processors on which most of us now write is the almost complete disappearance of any signs of labor. It is true that the given technology we have today is helping us revise for that we did not need to put that much effort in revising but there are some errors that can be invisible to our own sight. It is important to revise our paper so we will not ended the way how Greenblatt quoted “blot” as in put a stain in our writing. We revise so we could check blots and make changes to give the reader a flow of understanding. When doing revision, I would proof read first and check if anything that does not fit well in the essay, it is also best to have someone you know and trust proof read for you just to get some feedback. Well to me revising is related to editing, the only difference is that when revise you check what is written that focus on the clarity, the clearness and understanding of what is written. As for editing is basically editing as well but mainly focus on grammars, punctuations, the little yet common mistakes
Hey Ruiqi Chen, I have feeling that editing and revision are two of the same thing, but when ask that question I began to ask myself when I proofread and change certain errors, is that revising, editing, or both? There I got the idea that just checking the grammars and common mistake does not consider revising since I am only removing errors that make the reader stuck because the reader will try to make it work before continue on. Revision deals with adding, removing, and organizing our writing to improve our persuasion. I agree with editing as being a part of revision because both are almost the same just that one deals with the big picture while the other deals with little mistakes.
Hello, Kaki
I like your ideas that "no one can write a piece of work that is free of errors" and "a great writer like Shakespeare, who is very busy in his plays, could find time to revise his work. Even though he is a well known writer, he still needed to revise his play". It is true that no one can write a paper without any mistakes. Not only us but also famous writers need to spend more time on revising their work in order to rethink their ideas critically. It seems like revision is one important thing of good writing.

Greenblatt’s main idea is that every one revises their work. Greenblatt also states with the invention of technology it makes revising your work very easy and eliminates “any signs of labor”. Greenblatt supports his view in Shakespeare the Word Man by showing that even Shakespeare revised his work. “There are literally thousands of these tiny changes. What then of Shakespeare's reputation for "easiness"? He evidently had a stake in hiding all of the hard work that went into his apparent fluency.” It’s very important to revise your work. I believe that everything we write is a work in progress and it can always be improved. I never write a perfect paper or essay and like to get input on my work. I may do a draft of my ideas first then go back and put it into a correct essay form. I then like to have some one look my work over and then go back and make additional changes. I think the difference between revisions and editing is with editing you are looking for grammatical errors. With revision you are adding to your ideas and changing words or ideas around so the paper has a better flow.
Greenblatt's main idea is that revision is needed. Some of the most greatest writers have to do tedious revisions and rereading to get the perfect storyline. He supports his point of view by using Shakespeare as an example. He points out that even though Shakespeare or Hamlet do not usually revise their work; their work is revised for them during plays when actors read them.
It is important to revise your work because it will make your work close to perfect. Revising your work will help better the work. Revision can also help us write more and maybe add more ideas that we did not think of while writing. I revise my work by rereading it slowly, carefully and asking others with a fresh pair of eyes to read my work. I think the difference between revision and editing is that editing is going through your work and add or subtracting certain words and fixing grammar. While revision is rereading your work and possibly moving ideas around, adding more ideas or examples, and such. Editing is more of the surface area stuff and revision is the more important ideas.
Hello Michael Huynh,
I must say that our definition for revision and editing are spot on one another. I like how you referenced Greenblatt's "blot" to your post. I did not remember that Greenblatt saying that until you said it. I agree to what you said about how some errors are only visible to our own sight. I meant to say that in my post, but I forgot too. Like, when we write a essay on word, we spell check it and believe we are done. The computer does not read the essay or know what it is writing, but only to find common grammar errors. It is our responsibility to reread and revise it because we could catch better errors. Good points and usage of examples from the excerpt.
Hello Kimhung,
Yeah, Writing Center is really a good place for us to get help on revising my paper. The tutors there can tell us where we need to insert more ideas or evidences. In addition, they lead us to think more about our papers like if our thesis is strong and clear and if our evidences are persuadable.
Thank you and have a nice weekend!

Hi Michael,
Thank you for your comment!!
Like you, I have thought that editing and revision are the same thing before. However, after I took English 1A, I realized that they were two different things. Editing only changes grammars and spelling and delete some needless information, but revision is not just like that. It needs more changes such as rearranging our ideas.
Have a nice weenend!

Hi Jessica,
I agree with you about it being easy to make mistakes while writing. I find myself re-reading my work multiple times during my rough draft stage to get it as perfect as possible before I let someone read my work.
